ANGELS UNWARES

MANY YEARS AGO, SOMEWHERE IN THE 70’S, I WAS ON MY WAY TO THE BEACH ONE SUMMER WITH A FRIEND.  IT COULD HAVE BEEN EVENING WHEN DARKNESS HAD ALREADY TAKEN OVER FOR THE DAY OR IT COULD HAVE BEEN EARLY MORNING BEFORE THE RISING BEAUTY OF THE SUN.  I AM NOT SURE OF WHICH, BUT I REMEMBER THE DARKNESS.  I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED DRIVING TO THE BEACH LATE IN THE EVENING BECAUSE WHEN I GET TO MY DESTINATION I CAN WIGGLE MY TOES IN THE OCEAN FOAM BEFORE GOING TO BED AND WAKING UP REFRESHED TO ENJOY MY VACATION.  I HAVE ALSO ALWAYS LIKED LEAVING FOR THE BEACH IN THE EARLY MORNING BEFORE THE BREAK OF DAY BECAUSE WHEN I GET TO MY DESTINATION I WILL STILL HAVE THE ENTIRE DAY AHEAD OF ME.  I WAS DRIVING THE COUNTRY ROADS THAT DAY.  MY DAD HAD TAKEN OUR FAMILY THIS SAME ROUTE MANY TIMES DURING MY CHILDHOOD, SO IT WAS FAMILIAR TO ME.

SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY IN THE QUIETNESS AND STILLNESS OF THE DARKNESS MY FRIEND FELL ASLEEP IN THE PASSENGER SEAT.  AS I DROVE TOWARD THE BEACH THE TIME SOON BECAME EVEN MORE RELAXED TO ME AS WELL AND IN THAT SAME QUIETNESS AND STILLNESS OF THE DARKNESS I ALSO DRIFTED OFF TO SLEEP.

THERE WAS A ROAD WHERE I WAS TO MAKE A RIGHT-HAND TURN.  PRIOR TO DOZING OFF, I HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR THAT TURN.  I KNEW THAT IT WAS JUST UP AHEAD.  BUT…THE DARKNESS; THE QUIETNESS; THE STILLNESS.  I NEVER MADE THAT TURN.

ALL OF A SUDDEN AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL, AN ELDERLY HOMELESS MAN CASUALLY WALKED OUT IN FRONT OF MY CAR.  HE NEVER LOOKED AT ME.  IT WAS AS IF HE DID NOT SEE MY VEHICLE.  I WAS LOOKING AT THIS HOMELESS MAN FROM THE SIDE VIEW.  HE WAS NOT A TALL MAN.  HE HAD A SCRUFFY BEARD AND WORE A LONG COAT.  HE WAS SOMEWHAT SLUMPED AS HE SLOWLY CAME OUT INTO THE PATH OF MY CAR WALKING AS IF HE WERE TIRED AND WEARY.  THE SCENE THAT SURROUNDED HIM WAS FOGGY AS IF HE WAS IN A MIST OR A CLOUD.  WHEN HE WAS EXACTLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOOD OF MY CAR, MY REFLEXES RESPONDED AND I IMMEDIATELY SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES!

FULLY AWAKENED AT THIS MOMENT, I LOOKED TOWARD THE FRONT OF MY CAR FOR THE ELDERLY HOMELESS MAN.  HE WAS NOT THERE.  I LOOKED TO THE RIGHT AND TO THE LEFT OF ME.  HE WAS NOT THERE.  I KNEW THAT I HAD NOT HIT THIS MAN WITH MY CAR, BUT TO MAKE SURE, I BACKED UP.  HE WAS NOT THERE.  HE WAS NOT ANYWHERE THAT COULD BE SEEN BY THE HUMAN EYE.  COULD IT HAVE BEEN A VISION?  COULD IT HAVE BEEN A DREAM?  WAS HE REAL?

SOMETIMES GOD PROTECTS US WHEN WE DON’T EVEN REALIZE IT.  HE MAY REROUTE US ON A TRIP THAT WE ARE TAKING BY WAY OF A DETOUR.  WE MAY HAVE A FLAT TIRE OR HE MAY ORCHESTRATE A CHANGE IN OUR PLANS TO KEEP US FROM DANGER.  WE MAY LOSE OUR KEYS OR OUR GLASSES CAUSING US TO BE LATE LEAVING FOR OUR DESTINATION.  AND SOMETIMES.……GOD MAY EVEN SEND AN ELDERLY HOMELESS “ANGEL” TO OUR RESCUE TO KEEP US SAFE.

“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” ( Hebrews 13:2 )
